Update to Telephone Appeals Provider Identifier Requirements
Information posted September 26, 2008: This is an update to a banner message that first appeared on the June 2, 2008, Remittance and Status (R&S) Report and a website article posted on this website on May 30, 2008, titled, “NPI Required for Telephone Appeals.” The article did not indicate that a Texas Provider Identifier (TPI) may still be required in addition to the National Provider Identifier (NPI) for certain appeals requests. Click on the title for the complete, revised article.

TMHP cannot process telephone appeals without a National Provider Identifier (NPI). Telephone appeals require an NPI for all provider identifier fields (e.g., billing, performing, referring, facility, admitting, operating, and other). The NPI requirement includes claims that were previously processed using a Texas Provider Identifier (TPI).

TMHP will also require the TPI for telephone appeals related to changes in the billing or performing provider identifiers,. Telephone appeals follow the same process as electronic appeals; however, additional information (such as the TPI) may be requested to ensure appropriate claims processing.

For more information, call the TMHP Contact Center at 1-800-925-9126.
