Revised Taxonomy Codes for Hearing Aid Providers
Information posted July 3, 2009: TMHP has revised the taxonomy codes available to otologists and otorhinolaryngologists (ENTs), hearing aid fitters and dispensers, and audiologists who are enrolled as hearing aid providers (i.e., the provider’s enrollment letter indicates “Hearing Aid”). Click on the title to view the details.

Effective immediately, otologists and ENTs, hearing aid fitters and dispensers, and audiologists who are enrolled with Texas Medicaid or the CSHCN Services Program as hearing aid providers (i.e., the provider’s enrollment letter indicates “Hearing Aid”) must begin using the following taxonomy codes to submit electronic transactions for hearing aid services:

Specialty

Taxonomy Code(s)

Hearing Aid: audiologist

237600000X, 237700000X

Hearing Aid: hearing aid fitter and dispenser

237600000X

Hearing Aid: otologist and ENT

237600000X, 237700000X

Note: Providers must continue to use NPI and NPI-related data (i.e., taxonomy code, benefit code if applicable, ZIP code + 4, and physical address) on their claims and authorization transactions where applicable.

Hearing aid providers whose National Provider Identifiers (NPIs) are currently attested with taxonomy code 231H00000X only must re-attest their NPIs no later than August 31, 2009, with the appropriate taxonomy code(s) as listed above to prevent inaccurate claims processing and other transactions with TMHP. The hearing aid taxonomy code(s) can be primary or secondary.

Note: Providers whose enrollment letters indicate provider types other than “Hearing Aid” do not need to re-attest their NPIs.

Effective September 1, 2009, taxonomy code 231H00000X will no longer be valid for audiologists enrolled as hearing aid fitters and dispensers (i.e., the provider’s enrollment letter indicates “Hearing Aid”).

Claims for hearing services must be filed using the NPI and the appropriate attested taxonomy code as attested. Providers are encouraged to verify that they have attested all appropriate taxonomy codes.

Providers may attest taxonomy codes on this website by choosing Attest an NPI. Claims may be rejected or denied if an invalid or an unattested taxonomy code is used.

Additional information about claims filing requirements may be found in the 2009 Texas Medicaid Provider Procedures Manual, Section 5, “Claims Filing,” on page 5-1.
