Submitting Taxonomy Codes for NPI Attestation
Information posted March 12, 2007: In preparation for the May 23, 2007, federal deadline for the use of the National Provider Identifier (NPI), TMHP has created a page on the TMHP website that enables providers to report their NPI. Providers must attest to NPI data for each of their current Texas Provider Identifiers (TPIs). TMHP strongly suggests that providers complete attestation as soon as possible. Providers who have begun the NPI attestation process on the TMHP website may have found that some of the taxonomy codes listed on the confirmation page from the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) do not match the taxonomy codes automatically populated on the TMHP website Attestation Data Screen. Click on the title to view the details.

Group Providers (Multi- or Single-Specialty):

During the attestation process, the taxonomy code for group providers is automatically populated with the multi- or single-specialty group taxonomy code associated with the TPI entered.

Providers should continue the attestation process using the automatically populated taxonomy code.

Group providers that complete the attestation for individual providers in their group must click the plus sign (+) to expand the list and reveal all of the performing providers in the group. The most appropriate taxonomy codes should be selected for performing providers according to their specific rendering-provider type.

Missing/Different Taxonomy Code (Individual Providers)

The taxonomy code is automatically populated with the provider type and specialty associated with the TPI entered. The taxonomy code may not match the taxonomy code listed in the confirmation letter the provider received from NPPES.

Providers who need to validate the provider type and specialty associated with their TPI should contact the TMHP Contact Center at 1-800-925-9126, Option 2, for questions about enrollment information.

Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Providers

DME providers have received taxonomy codes 332B00000X or 332BX2000X in the confirmation letter from NPPES. Currently, TMHP automatically populates taxonomy codes 251E0000X and 261QA3000X when DME medical suppliers TPI numbers are entered. TMHP has scheduled a system update effective March 12, 2007. The change will include updating the taxonomy codes for DME providers to include 332B00000X and 332BX2000X.

General Information

TMHP is encouraging providers to complete the attestation process using the existing taxonomy codes. Providers may update their account at a later date if additional taxonomy codes become available.

The taxonomy code is auto populated according to the provider type and specialty associated with the TPI entered. This taxonomy code may not match the taxonomy code listed in the confirmation letter received from NPPES. It is critical that the taxonomy code included in electronic transactions matches to a taxonomy code included in the attestation record. The secondary codes included during the attestation process will be used as additional matching criteria for claims and authorization processing.

Taxonomy codes do not affect pricing or the level of pricing. Taxonomy codes will be used to assist TMHP with crosswalking the NPI back to the TPI.

For issues and changes related to the implementation of the NPI, refer to the National Provider Identifier (NPI) Special Bulletin, No. 202, and to the NPI Announcements page on the TMHP website.
