Update to “New ICD-10 COVID-19 Procedure Codes for Therapeutics and Vaccines”

Last updated on

This is an update to the article titled “New ICD-10 COVID-19 Procedure Codes for Therapeutics and Vaccines,” which was published on this website on December 22, 2020. The article incorrectly stated that the updates to the ICD diagnosis codes will be included in the All Patient Refined – Diagnosis Related Groups (APR-DRG) software (Version 38.1). The update is that the reference to the All Patient Refined – Diagnosis Related Groups (APR-DRG) software (Version 38.1) was included in error. The codes were added to the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) but not the APR-DRG version 38.1.

The following is the updated information:

Effective for dates of service on or after January 1, 2021, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is implementing 21 new surgical procedure codes for the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). These new surgical codes will be for COVID-19 therapeutics and vaccines, including antibody treatments and immunomodulators, and they will be included in the ICD-10 Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-PCS) for inpatient hospital surgical procedure codes.
