HHSC Updates Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Season Schedule

Last updated on

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has updated the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) season schedule to end the interseasonal RSV season on September 30, 2021.

Per the recommendations from the RSV task force and the HHSC Office of Medical Director (OMD), HHSC requires prescribing providers to reassess the need for RSV prophylaxis beginning October 1, 2021 and submit a new Syangis prior authorization request. A new prior authorization is required for clients who continue to meet the criteria for treatment with Synagis during the traditional season.

The prior authorization criteria and the policy for processing those prior authorization forms will remain unchanged. The Vendor Drug Program (VDP), in partnership with the RSV task force and the OMD, will continue to monitor the situation and make recommendations throughout the season.

Providers can refer to the article titled "2021-22 Respiratory Syncytial Virus Assessment and Synagis Authorization,” published on September 9, 2021, for information about prior authorization requests and forms for Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and the Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) Services Program.
