SHARS Special Transportation Benefits Will Change on May 1, 2024

Last updated on

Effective for dates of service on or after May 1, 2024, School Health and Related Services (SHARS) special transportation benefits will change for Texas Medicaid.

Personal care services provided by bus monitors, bus aides, and transportation aides may no longer be reimbursed under the SHARS program.

If personal care services are provided on the bus by providers on the Random Moment Time Study (RMTS) participant list, the type of personal care service that was performed must be included in documentation.

Refer to the current Texas Medicaid Provider Procedures Manual, School Health and Related Services (SHARS) Handbook, subsection 2.3.8.1, “Documentation for Special Transportation Services,” for a complete list of information that must be documented in the trip log for each one-way specialized transportation trip.
