HHSC Reminds Nursing Facilities of the Importance of Maintaining HVAC Equipment

Last updated on

Performing routine maintenance on heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment and systems ensures nursing facilities can maintain specified indoor air temperatures for resident safety and comfort as outdoor temperatures rise in the summer.

Nursing facilities must maintain HVAC equipment and systems to protect the health and ensure the safety of residents. Routine maintenance, including monitoring the effectiveness of HVAC air filters and cleaning or replacing filters as needed, ensures the equipment will operate as intended to heat and cool resident-use areas.

Nursing facilities initially licensed before Sept. 11, 2003, must have cooling systems that ensure the indoor air temperature is no warmer than 81 degrees in areas used by residents.

Nursing facilities initially licensed on or after Sept. 11, 2003, must have cooling systems that ensure the indoor air temperature is no warmer than 78 degrees in areas used by residents.
