Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Dose Update

Last updated on

On May 13, 2022, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) added formulary coverage for a new booster dose-only formulation of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for individuals 18 years of age or older. This formulation is authorized under the emergency use authorization (EUA).

The following national drug codes (NDCs) were added to the formulary for Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) as a reimbursable pharmacy benefit:

Drug Name

Dosage

NDC

Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine (EUA)

0.5 mL

Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine (EUA)

0.5 mL

Two formulations of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine are now authorized for individuals 18 years of age or older; both can be used for booster doses.

Both formulations will continue to be available on the market, but they differ in presentation, concentration, and dosage:

  • The 2.5 milliliter (mL) multidose vial of the new booster dose-only formulation has a dark blue cap and a purple label border. A single dosage is 0.5 mL. The concentration is 100 micrograms (mcg)/mL.
  • The previously available formulation in 5.5 mL or 7.5 mL multidose vials with a red cap and a light blue label border can be used for the primary vaccination series or booster doses. The booster dosage for the red cap formulation is 0.25 mL, and the concentration is 200 mcg/mL.
