Update to Age Restrictions for Vaccine Procedure Codes 90671 and 90756

Last updated on

Note: Texas Medicaid managed care organizations (MCOs) must provide all medically necessary, Medicaid-covered services to eligible clients. Administrative procedures such as prior authorization, precertification, referrals, and claims/encounter data filing may differ from traditional Medicaid (fee-for-service) and from MCO to MCO. Providers should contact the client's specific MCO for details.

Effective February 1, 2023, for dates of service on or after December 1, 2022, the age limitation for vaccine procedure codes 90671 and 90756 will change for Texas Medicaid.

The Food and Drug Administration has expanded the age limitation as follows:

  • Vaxneuvance™ (pneumococcal 15-valent conjugate vaccine), procedure code 90671, to be used in individuals 6 weeks of age or older
  • Flucelvax® Quadrivalent (influenza vaccine), procedure code 90756, to be used in individuals 6 months of age or older

Note: Procedure codes for vaccines distributed by the Texas Vaccines for Children Program are processed as Informational on Texas Medicaid claims for individuals who are 18 years of age or younger. However, these procedure codes are reported with the procedure code for the administration of the vaccine, which allows the provider to be reimbursed for the administration service.

Affected claims submitted for individuals in the updated age limitations with dates of service on or after December 1, 2022, will be reprocessed. When the claims are reprocessed, providers may receive additional payment, which will be reflected on Remittance and Status Reports.
