Update to “Issue Identified With CLIA Waived Claims”

Last updated on

Note: Texas Medicaid managed care organizations (MCOs) must provide all medically necessary, Medicaid-covered services to Medicaid members who are enrolled in their MCO. Administrative procedures, such as prior authorization, precertification, referrals, and claims and encounter data filing, may differ from traditional Medicaid (fee-for-service) and from MCO to MCO. Providers should contact the member’s specific MCO for details.

This is an update to the article titled “Issue Identified With CLIA Waived Claims,” which was published on the Texas Medicaid & Healthcare Partnership (TMHP) website on June 24, 2024.

TMHP previously identified an issue affecting Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) claims. Some claims were denied in error due to the lack of a laboratory certification (LC) code on the certificate for related specialty for CLIA waived lab tests.

TMHP has resolved this issue and will reprocess affected claims that are identified with dates of service on or after February 10, 2023, through August 9, 2024. When the claims are reprocessed, providers may receive additional payment, which will be reflected on Remittance and Status (R&S) Reports.

Reminder: All providers of laboratory services must comply with the CLIA rules and regulations. Providers must submit their CLIA certifications and can bill only for services for which they have an appropriate CLIA certification on file. Providers that do not comply with CLIA are not reimbursed for laboratory services.

All providers that bill laboratory services must have CLIA certification for the procedure code being billed. If a provider bills for a procedure without appropriate CLIA certification, TMHP will deny reimbursement.
