Update to Seating Assessment Benefits for the CSHCN Services Program Effective May 1, 2026

Beginning May 1, 2026, providers can submit claims for one of the following procedures with the same date of service as a seating assessment (procedure code 97542) with appropriate documentation:

Physical therapy (PT) evaluation (procedure code 97161, 97162, or 97163)
Occupational therapy (OT) evaluation (procedure code 97165, 97166, or 97167)
PT or OT reevaluation (procedure code 97164 or 97168)

Clients who are not receiving therapy services may require a physical or occupational therapy evaluation or reevaluation. The therapy evaluation or reevaluation may be performed at a different time on the same day as a seating assessment. Providers must submit claims with documentation showing that the evaluation or reevaluation and the seating assessment were performed at distinctly separate times to be considered for reimbursement.

The Texas Medicaid & Healthcare Partnership (TMHP) will manually review claims for therapy evaluations or reevaluations that are submitted with the same date of service as a seating assessment to confirm that there was no overlap in the times that the services were performed.

TMHP will update the “Durable Medical Equipment (DME)” section of the Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) Services Program Provider Manual to reflect this change on June 15, 2026.
